SUMMARY:Navigation Introduction - 1 Day
DESCRIPTION:This introductory level course takes place in Snowdonia and will get you started on your navigational journey\, preparing you to safely enjoy hillwalking and a range of other outdoor activities without getting lost. \n(Mountain Rescue estimate that 80% of accidents in the hills are the result of a simple navigational error). \nThe course is fun and interactive\, based entirely outdoors and is a practical hands on course. It is aimed at people with no navigation experience\, whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others\, guidebooks\, easy well-defined routes or reliant on your phone to direct you! \nThe course covers navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features and basic map interpretation. \n————————————————————————- \nSyllabus \nMap scales and selection of maps. \nUse a 6 figure grid reference with worded descriptions to define the position of a map feature and to locate a feature on the ground. \nOrientate the map using handrails\, obvious point features and major landforms. \nUse linear features (e.g. paths\, tracks\, clear boundaries) as handrails in simple navigation exercises. \nRelate prominent landforms such as large hills and valleys to corresponding contour information on the map. \nOrientating a map to the ground in front of you to locate yourself. \nUse an orientated map to confirm the direction of travel. \nUse clearly identifiable features to confirm position along the route. \nMeasure horizontal distance on the map and estimate distance on the ground using timing. \nPlan and implement simple routes and navigation strategies based on the above skills. \n——————————————————— \nCourse details: \nThis course runs over a single day and  All training will be delivered practically in the outdoors rather than in a classroom. DESCRIPTION:  \nNational Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) – Silver Award\n  \nThe Silver National Navigation Award is a two day course and develops skills acquired at Bronze Level so that you can navigate in open countryside using compass bearings and natural landforms. The course is ideal for participants who are confident in using a map to follow paths and tracks in lowland countryside terrain and want to learn how to navigate off path.  The course will cover: \nSetting and following compass bearings across open ground \nUsing pacing to measure distance \nEstimating the time needed for height gain \nUsing landforms like hills\, ridges\, spurs and valleys to navigate \nAdopting appropriate strategies for navigating from one point to another\, using techniques like aiming off and attack points. \n————————————————————————– \nThe NNAS Silver Navigator Award will take place in Snowdonia National Park and will involve periods where you’ll be navigating away from paths and tracks. The course is accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 5 and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion. \n————————————————————————- \nSyllabus \nUtilise the skills and techniques of the Bronze Award in the context of Silver Award navigation strategies. \nRelate small hills\, small valleys\, prominent re-entrants and prominent spurs to their corresponding map contours. Use prominent hills\, ridges\, spurs and valleys as a means of navigation in good visibility. \nUse landforms and point features to orientate the map and as collecting and catching features. \nUse a compass to: Accurately follow a bearing; aim off; check the direction of handrails and other linear features. \nDeviate briefly from a compass bearing to avoid obstacles or difficult terrain and accurately regain the original line. \nUse back bearings to check route following accuracy. \nMeasure distance on the ground in varied\, open terrain using timing and pacing and make practical allowances for any discrepancies. \nSimplify legs using coarse navigation\, attack points and fine navigation. \nRecognise dangerous or difficult terrain on map and ground. \nPlan and implement navigational strategies based on the above skills. \nMaintain route finding accuracy in poor visibility or darkness. \nRecognise a navigation error within a few minutes and apply appropriate relocation techniques. \nUnderstand how personal fitness and nature of terrain affect route choice both at the planning stage and on the ground. \nUnderstand the potential consequences of fatigue and physical discomfort in demanding terrain and/or extreme weather conditions. \nSelect appropriate clothing\, equipment and first aid items for walking in open country in all weather conditions. \nDemonstrate an understanding of the Countryside Code\, current access legislation and the environmental impact of walkers on the countryside. \nUnderstand the responsibilities of walkers towards other countryside interests such as farming\, forestry and conservation. \n———————————————————- \nCourse details: \nThis course runs over two days. You must complete the full course and pass the assessment in order to achieve the Silver NNAS Award. The assessment will normally take place on the afternoon of Day 2. DESCRIPTION:National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) – Gold Award\n  \nThe Gold Navigator Award is the highest qualification within the NNAS framework and builds on the skills acquired at the Bronze and Silver levels and adds techniques and skills for dealing with complex contour features both large and small. The course takes place in Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park. \nThe Gold National Navigation Award now includes pre- and post-course question papers. These will be provided to candidates on completion of booking. \nThe NNAS Gold Navigator Award is accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 6\, and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion. \nGold courses are run by Course Directors who not only have plenty of top-level navigation experience but also have been on a special NNAS-run course in tutoring Gold courses. \nSyllabus \n                                                          —————————————————————————————————– \nUtilise the skills and techniques of the Bronze and Silver Awards in the context of Gold National Navigation Award navigation strategies. \nUtilise contours and fine detail as the prime method of navigation. \nAccurately: Follow a route\, judge distance\, check progress against time\, use relevant compass skills and maintain continuous map contact. \nUse back bearings and transits to confirm the current position. \nUse aspect of slope as an aid to relocation. \nSelect appropriate techniques within an overall navigation strategy. \nNavigate in intricate terrain in reduced visibility i.e. mist or darkness. \nSelect an appropriate\, safe route in relation to height gain and loss\, dangerous terrain and other major hazards. \nAssess the route ahead in the field in relation to prevailing conditions or changing circumstances (e.g. weather\, time\, daylight\, ability/fitness) and re-plan the route appropriately if necessary. \nShorten a route\, use an escape route and know emergency procedures. \nRecognise the occurrence of a navigational error within a few minutes and apply appropriate relocation techniques. \nSelect appropriate clothing\, equipment and first aid for walking in remote areas in all weather conditions. \nUnderstand the physical demands created by hill and moorland terrain in all weather conditions. \nUnderstand the effects of cold\, heat\, fatigue and discomfort on decision making and execution of a selected route. \nUnderstand the implications of climate change on the outdoor environment and be knowledgeable in practical steps to mitigate its effect. \nUnderstand the pros and cons of appropriate electronic navigation devices and describe/demonstrate their use in the context of Gold terrain. \n——————————————————————————————- \n  \nCourse details: \nThis course runs over two days. You must complete the full course\, pass the assessment and answer all questions included on the pre & post assessment criteria in order to achieve the Gold NNAS Award.
